Docusaurus is Meta's open-source documentation framework built with React. It generates fast static sites with built-in support for versioning, i18n, search, and MDX. Thousands of open-source projects use it, including React, Jest, and many others.
It is completely free and self-hosted — you deploy to any static hosting provider like Vercel, Netlify, or GitHub Pages. The tradeoff is that you manage the infrastructure and customization yourself, which requires developer involvement.
pros
- Completely free and open source with no vendor lock-in
- Full customization with React components and plugins
- Built-in versioning, i18n, and search
- Large community with extensive plugin ecosystem
cons
- Requires developer setup and maintenance
- No built-in editor for non-technical contributors
- Design customization requires React knowledge
- No built-in analytics or user engagement metrics
